Field Produced by JOSHUA BROCKMAN

This story was part of American Stories: Immigrants Past and Present partially funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

This story focused on the immigrants now driving taxis in New York City. I spent several days combing gas stations, taxi schools and garages in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens for drivers from Bangladesh, Haiti, Russia and other countries that were part of large waves of immigration that fed the taxi industry. Length: 10 mins.
